Ayn Rand chose Leonard Peikoff to be her successor as the spokesman for Objectivism. And in this brilliantly reasoned, thought-provoking work we learn why, as he demonstrates how far America has been detoured from its original path and led down the same road that Germany followed to Nazism. Self-sacrifice, Oriental mysticism, racial "truth," the public good, doing one's duty—these are among the seductive catch-phrases that Leonard Peikoff dissects, examining the kind of philosophy they symbolize, the type of thinking that lured Germany to its doom and that he says is now prevalent in the United States. Here is a frightening look at where America may be heading, a clarion call for all who are concerned about preserving our right to individual freedom.

The single most important book on the cause of Nazism and the only book that identifies the cause at the deepest level: philosophy. A brilliant analysis of the ideas that led to Nazism. Superficial thinkers will complain that, for example, Kant was not a Nazi. True but this misses the point. Kant destroyed both reason and values, including the morality of loving oneself. The assault on reason set up the Nazi worship of the irrational will. The assault on the self set up the Nazi demand that the self is of no importance and that man must sacrifice for the state (volk). Kant's apparent defense of rights in politics is meaningless since his epistemology and ethics destroyed the foundation of rights. Peikoff weaves in the ideas of Kant and other philosophers and ties it all into pre-Nazi culture and the philosophies of the contending political parties into an integrated whole. A brilliant piece of philosophical detection and integration.
I have long considered how certain ideas give way to others, and seen their practical directions. But I had no idea that any groups executed philosophy's worst ideas so wholly. This book began by affirming some of my thoughts, then proceeded to demonstrate, right down to the bone, the philosophical death march that Nazism had to make. From the second chapter, reading was as walking downhill on a narrow road: there were no turns, the destination was always in sight, with logic leading the way.
I consider this to be one of the most important works of contempo philosophic literature to-date. All those concerned with the well-being and inalienable rights of man would do well to read this great gift to not only Americans, but to all the first-world.
The ability of humans to process information is extraordinary and what makes us “human.†This book is a difficult read. There is no doubt about that. For people who still have that ability to process information, it’s a treasure trove. The human mind is extraordinarily malleable under stress. Under prolonged mental stress and state-sponsored disinformation, seemingly “normal†people are able to engage in or sanction the most horrific acts against their neighbors. This book focuses on the execrable German philosophical foundation of the Nazi regime but helps to understand how collectivist ideologies in general (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Obama, Chavez) are able to strip away any sense of the individual in furtherance of the State. Highly recommend if you are living in 2017 and are trying to understand how and why the “deep state†is working overtime to keep their surrogates in positions of power after their preferred head of state (Clinton) was rejected. This will not end well.
I wanted to understand how Nazism took hold of a civilized people. Mr. Peikoff delivers the answer brilliantly and convincingly. His warnings to America need to be heard.
One of the best books I have read in a long time. The book traces the psychological thinking of the German people leading up to Hitler's Germany, and the thinking that carried them through the holocaust. The reasons and thinking of the German people's love for Hitler are explained. Anyone interested in how/why terrible things happen in our day will certainly enjoy this book from both a historical perspective, as well as from its relevancy to 21st Century challenges.Dr. Tom Accardi
I liked the way the author explained Kantian philosophy and the Hegelian philosophy to explain the Nazi raise to power. This book gives you a solid understanding of how philosophy can change a nation for the worse. I recommend it wholeheartedly because it will open your mind to our current reality. The author knows his subject quite well and he weaves a narrative based on philosophical facts. I couldn't stop reading it.
Thought provoking analysis and comparison that puts a more complete foundation under bits of common sense observation. Makes some of the inexplicable actions of seemingly random leadership decisions fall into a recognizable pattern or at least a direction which can then be extrapolated and predicted.
